Otera uses traditional Japanese painting techniques such as line drawing and shading to depict the human body in black ink. By painstakingly layering light sumi ink over and over again, the monochrome hues are rendered even richer and softer, and the texture and humidity of the skin can be felt. The works in this exhibition are based on the artist’s own experiences and memories of the past. The works have a much higher level of abstraction than his previous works, with the decorative elements removed, the bodies seeming to shimmer and disappear like smoke and the body parts magnified as if photographed in close-up. The fragments of the body that have been created and lost in memory are quietly lined up in a breathless row, speaking to the viewer in a small voice, as if spinning a poem. The music written for the exhibition by musician Ohzora Kimishima is also playing at the venue. The music is based on the sounds of the artist’s daily life and the sounds he makes while creating his works. The sounds are as if they are carving out life, evoking memories of a gray, shifting landscape. Please enjoy it with the paintings.
